Played in a Scotch 1st XVIII premiership in 2006 before joining the Demons via the TAC Cup competition. Ankle and leg issues hindered Strauss early in his first season on the Demons list before suffering a shoulder injury in the VFL which ended his season without playing a senior match.

Impressed in the 2010 pre-season and earned a call-up to make his debut in the first round of the season. He played the next week but was dropped and spent the rest of the year at Casey.

Recalled into the senior side in 2011 he played nine of ten matches between Round 11 and Round 20 before suffering an horrific double break of the leg against Carlton which ended his season and much of the next before returning in the VFL midway through 2012.

Returning to the senior side as a late replacement in Round 16 Strauss then held his spot for the next seven weeks, graduated from earlier being named substitute on multiple occasions to a place in the starting lineup.

Strauss managed just six games in Melbourne's poor 2013 season, all losses, and missed 10 games in the middle of the year. His season was finished with a shoulder injury in Round 21, and he failed to add another game to his senior tally in 2014. He was delisted at the end of the year.

Played for Old Scotch in 2015.

Strauss and teammate Joel Macdonald were later business partners, but the relationship soured and Strauss sued Macdonald for $15 million.
