An excellent athletic performer at the AFL Draft Camp, and one of South Australia's highest possession winners in the junior carnival Bode was named as a carnival All-Australian alongside future teammate Nathan Jones. He spent much of that season in the SANFL reserves but played seniors towards the end of the year.

Picked up by the Demons in the 2005 Rookie Draft, Bode spent much of his first season playing for the Sandringham reserves. He broke into the Zebras senior side near the end of '06 and won a second year as a rookie. He suffered a serious back injury early in 2007 but forced his way into the Melbourne side late that year.

Kicked two goals in the Round 22, 2007 match against Carlton but played just two more games in 2008 and was delisted at the end of the season and returned to Sturt. In 2011 he joined Norwood, staying there through 2015, playing in three premierships from 2012 and representing South Australia.
