The rover played with Prahran in 1938 and 1939 before World War II curtailed his career. He enlisted with the army in 1942 and served until October 1943. Porter trained with St Kilda in 1944 before signing with Melbourne. Lightly played in his first year he became a regular in 1945, kicking 26 goals across 19 games.
Porter was back out of favour in 1946 and played four games.
Later served as a director from 1967 until the end of 1970 when he retired his position due to business commitments.
