Originally drafted by the Hawks from Tasmania, Williams didn't make it out of the Hawthorn Reserves squad before being dropped from their list and returning to his original club. He played for his state against a Victoria B side during 1991 and was subsequently snapped up by the Demons in the mid-season draft.
Despite kicking more than 50 goals in the 1992 reserves competition Williams could only force his way into the senior side for a month. A 12 goal haul against Richmond in Round 4 was his best seconds performance and he was promoted to the senior side the next week. He managed four games in a row before being dropped back to the reserves, never to play AFL footy again.
Williams returned to Tasmania to play for the Burnie Hawks/Dockers from 1993-1994 and 1997-2000.
