A ruckman/forward Wilkinson was on the Melbourne list in 1957 and 1958 - playing just one game where he was named as a reserve. He was called into action during the match but it was his only appearance for the Demons.

He didn't add a single game to his tally in 1959 before joining Richmond for 1960. He kicked 21 goals to top the Tigers goalkicking in his first season, but after just 29 more games he was on the move again - this time to Tasmania.

In 204 appearances as a captain/coach for City-South (now South Launceston) in the NTFA between 1962 and 1972, he won Premierships in 1962 and 1966 as well as a state championship win over Hobart in 1966. In 1973 he served as non-playing senior coach. During that season he represented Tasmania at the ANFC Carnival in Hobart, and during his career played six times for the state.

Later worked for ABC as a Tasmanian football commentator and as an administrator for the NTFL.

A member of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame he is also the captain of the City-South "Team of the Century".
