Originally considered by the Demons before the 2000 National Draft, Poyas was overlooked amid concern from Orthodox Jewish president Joseph Gutnick about recruiting a Jewish player who would then play on the Sabbath. With the two selections that they may have used to recruit Poyas Melbourne got Brad Green and Paul Wheatley. He had previously captained the Under 16 and Under 18 Vic Metro sides.
Richmond instead picked Poyas with selection 22 in the draft and he spent three seasons with the Tigers for just nine games, including a losing Preliminary Final, before being delisted. In this time he was the joint winner of the 2001 Liston Medal for best player in the VFL but a serious fractured collarbone injury in his last season did him no favors.
With Gutnick ousted as president and Poyas back on the market he was chosen as a rookie selection by Melbourne but never played a senior game despite finishing 3rd in the Sandringham Best and Fairest. He finished third in the 2003 Zebras best and fairest.
After being delisted he took time out of football before returning to play for Sandringham, and won a premiership in 2006. Poyas played for St Kilda City in the Southern Football League during 2010 and 2011 before joining NEAFL side Broadbeach in 2012.
