Fenton-Smith first trialled with Melbourne in 1951 but didn't make the list. He returned to Ormond that year, before playing two seasons in Brisbane. He rejoined Ormond in 1954, playing three more years and captaining them in 1956. After playing for the VAFA against a combined team of VFA/VFL amateurs in an exhibition match for the 1956 Olympics, Fenton-Smith gave the VFL another go. He made Melbourne's list, and debuted early the next year, playing in a variety of positions including ruck and defence.
Played 18 games in his first season, including that year's premiership victory. In his three seasons he played in two flags and a losing Grand Final. 1959 was his last season, after missing three games through a punctured lung suffered in a car accident, he was transferred to Adelaide by his employer in the week before finals. Fenton-Smith flew back to Melbourne to play finals. He was pursued by six SANFL clubs, including a playing/coach offer from North Adelaide, but chose Sturt.
Fenton-Smith was appointed to Melbourne's committee in August 1976, and served until resigning in May 1981.
