The 2000 JJ Liston Medallist for best player in the VFL, and best on ground for the league in a 2001 representative match against the SANFL was drafted at the end of that year but never played a game for the Demons.

At the end of his first year with the club Robbins was caught in the Bali bombings when the Sari club exploded just before he, Steven Febey and Steven Armstrong walked in.

Delisted by the Demons at the end of 2002, Robbins stayed with Sandringham and won a second Liston Medal for his performances in 2003. He won the Sandringham best and fairest that year as well and played 37 games in total for the Zebras.

Joined Subiaco in 2004 and played three seasons in the WAFL. He then returned to the VFL to play for Port Melbourne.

Wore number 41 in 2002.

May have been the David Robbins who played for Parkdale Vultures in 2011.
