A speedy midfielder who dominated A-Grade amateurs for two years before being rookie listed by Melbourne, Nicholson was elevated to the Demons' senior side midway through 2011 and impressed during his nine games. He was retained as a rookie for his second season, then elevated to the senior list in pre-season as a replacement for injured ruckman Max Gawn. He was suspended by the club for a week after Round 1, 2012 for drinking while in injury rehab.

Nicholson returned to the senior side in Round 9, playing impressive games for the year despite missing three weeks with a jaw fracture suffered during the Round 18 loss to North Melbourne. He added another 11 games the following year, but found himself out of favour in 2014, only appearing once before being delisted at the conclusion of the season.

Nicholson joined Hampden League club Port Fairy as a playing assistant coach for 2015. In the off-season he played for NTFL side Waratahs. Coached Port Fairy in 2018.
