Originally from the northern Victorian town of Rushworth, Burge ended his studies at Melbourne High School where he was a member of their first XVIII football side.

Recruited by the Fuschias from Elsternwick, Burge played five games as a ruckman/forward during the 1914 season, but missed the start of the next season after enlisting in the army in early 1915.

Originally serving in the Pay Corps, Burge transferred to the Light House division and eventually the infantry. Burge was killed in action, aged 23, during fighting at Villers-Bretonneux, France. Having already survived the Gallipoli landings and a German gas attack over three years since enlisting, his death came just three months before the end of hostilities.
