The son of Des Campbell represented Victoria Country in the 1992 Teal Cup, and was recruited under the Father/Son rule at the end of that year.

He spent all of 1993 in the Reserves, and was in the squad for that year's Grand Final. After remaining in the Reserves for most of 1994, Campbell played one game at the end of that year.

After leaving Melbourne he played in a Goulburn League premiership with Kyabram where he played in a premiership in 1996. At the end of that year, he was picked by Hawthorn with selection #6 in the Rookie Draft and played for their Reserves in 1997. Campbell then returned to Tongala, where he remained until 2004 before being a playing assistant coach at Moroopna from 2003 until he was appointed senior coach in 2008.

Campbell's younger brother Blake played for Carlton between 2002 and 2003. Brad filled in for the Blues' Reserves in 2001.
