Described as "dapper on and off the field", Flintoft joined the Reds after winning a metropolitan junior championship with South Yarra.
Flintoft enlisted in the army's 57th Battalion in August 1915 and travelled to Europe in December of the next year. He was involved in combat in Egypt, France and Belgium. He returned to Australia in March 1919.When he returned to Australia he served on both the MCC and MFC committees, was awarded life membership and served as club president from 1947 to 1949. He also played for South Yarra amateurs on return from the war.
In 1934 and 1935 he was Mayor of Prahran, and served as President of Melbourne from 1947 to 1949. He was chairman of the MCC's football club committee from 1938 to 1949 and was Melbourne's VFL delegate from 1947 to 1950.
Some sources say he was in the 58th Battalion.
