Rover who was runner up in the 1946 Ovens & Murray League Best and Fairest award and winner of Benalla's B&F despite being just over 19-years-old.
Impressed with the Demons in the 1947 pre-season practice matches and was assigned number 9 on the senior list but did not play a senior game despite reports that he had been guaranteed four games with the first eighteen.
He remained living in Benalla and had to travel back and forth, deciding to return home permanently at the end of May. He immediately rejoined his old club, winning their best and fairest at least twice more and twice finishing runner-up in the Ovens & Murray League Best and Fairest.
