Vagg first signed with Footscray in 1960, but after being denied a clearance by Shepparton he stayed in the country for two more years. He returned to the league with Melbourne in 1962, playing as a skilful and elusive half-forward flanker. After five games in his first season, he played 18 in 1963.
In 1964, Vagg kicked 22 goals in 20 games, playing in that year's premiership side. After three goals in the Semi Final win, Vagg was held goalless in the big game. Late in the match, with Melbourne clinging to a slim lead he had the ball within scoring range but opted to kick the ball out of on the full for a throw-in rather than have a shot that would risk Collingwood quickly taking the ball to the other end.
Despite applying for a clearance during 1967, and rumours that he was on his way to Carlton, Vagg remained with the club until retiring from VFL football midway through 1969. In 1970 he joined VFA club Prahran but struggled with injury and retired after missing most of 1971 with a leg injury.
Vagg later coached Watsonia's Under 18s for three years, then their seniors for six seasons from 1982.
