August 1892 Match vs Fitzroy

Saturday 6 August - Fitzroy Cricket Ground

Fitzroy 1.4, 3.6, 4.10, 5.15
Melbourne 4.1, 5.2, 6.2, 6.4

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Harry Graham 3, Wilson 3

A large crowd of spectators gathered to see a thrilling game. There was no wind so it mattered little which way the teams kicked. Fitzroy got the first goal, and Alf Healing had to rescue his side from another attack.

Fitzroy twice repelled attacks by Melbourne, and a chance for Gaunt was ruined when he was spoiled by his own teammate. The equaliser eventually came through Graham, and he got the second too before Kelly scored the first almost immediately after to give his side a commanding lead.

Wilson got his first, and his side's fourth, late in the first quarter and Fitzroy were left with it all to do. Fitzroy were the better side early in the second but messed up a number of chances and saw Melbourne boot their fifth through Harry Graham on the run due to the Fitzroy full-back being out of place.

The home team managed to get two goals to close the quarter and make the game interesting. With the game back in the balance Fitzroy had the best of the play in the third quarter but couldn't make it count on the scoreboard. Melbourne scored first, and even though Fitzroy managed a goal they were still two behind.

Melbourne started the last term in front but after a rough game where there were "several distinct flourishes of the fist" they ran out of gas. Somehow the defence managed to hold firm for a victory.

After the match some Fitzroy fans attacked the Melbourne players who had to be escorted to cabs by police. The cabs were then pelted as they left.

Best were Sheahan, H. Graham and Kelly.
