August 1878 Match vs Essendon

Saturday 31 August - Flemington
Crowd - 400 to 500

Essendon 1.3
Melbourne 1.10 (half time 1.3 - 0.3)

Match drawn

Goalkicker: John Macdonald 1

On the largest ground in the competition Essendon stacked their side with fast, running players to take advantage of its wide spaces. After suffering a surprise defeat to Essendon in July, Melbourne fielded a strong team. The home side was also represented by almost the best side they could muster.

Essendon kicked with the wind in the first half, and they scored the first goal early in the game.

After missing an easy chance to equalise at the end of the first half, Melbourne came back with the breeze in their favour and immediately started challenging for a goal. Essendon had the chance to go two up, but a shot was held up in the wind and a few minutes later Macdonald levelled the score.

Best were Longden, Sillett and Sandilands.
