The match was played at a high standard match despite a damp ground which caused a number of spills. The match was played over two and a half hours. Green scored the first goal for Melbourne and the home side held South out until the last 20 minutes when they finally conceded. The clubs then decided to end the game due to encroachment of spectators onto the field.
