Melbourne's last pre-season hit-out before Round 1 turned out to be a disaster as they were ruthlessly picked apart by the reigning premiers. Ex-Demon Cameron Bruce was in charge of the Hawks, and he engineered a massive victory.
The signs were bad for Melbourne early on, with Hawthorn barely allowing them to get their hands on the ball, but a quick two goals from Jeremy Howe gave the home side some hope going into quarter time. From there Hawthorn took over, kicking 10 goals in a row before Shannon Byrnes managed Melbourne's third.
Hawthorn were so far in front they were able to move key defender Josh Gibson forward where he kicked two goals as part of the procession. A late goal to Jake Spencer gave Melbourne some hope of keeping the margin under 100 but they weren't able to add another goal and instead conceded a 21st to take the margin to 110 points.
Best were Howe, Cross and Dunn. Nathan Jones suffered a cut eye, Jack Grimes a cut head and James Frawley a rib injury
