Despite including seven first-games, four rookies amongst them, the Demons did enough in the hot Darwin conditions to engineer a last quarter comeback and qualify for the second round of the competition.
Melbourne had built up a 17 point lead at half time, only to turn for home five points in arrears but they struck back to win by a goal.
