The Demons won in the air, but Collingwood's pace and composure gave them a win to keep them in the 1946 finals race. The Demons kicked the first goal of the day but then dropped 19 points behind at quarter time.
When they had their turn with the breeze Melbourne reeled them back in with a six goal to none second term against the wasteful Pies but Collingwood took over again in the third quarter and only desperate defence kept Melbourne within five goals.
The Pies opened up a 19 point lead early but were wasteful in the second and Melbourne reeled them back in with a 6 goal to none second term.
Best were Arnold, W. Scanlon and Quinn.
