After captain/coaching his side to a winless season in 1919, George Haines was replaced as coach by former Fitzroy stalwart Gerald Brosnan. Melbourne had been in talks with Collingwood champion Percy Wilson but could not convince him to leave the Magpies. Haines retained the captaincy until Wilson crossed over in 1921.

Brosnan led Melbourne their first win since July 1915 in the opening round, and had the side at 4-1 before they lost their way, only winning once more to finish second last. In Round 7, the crowd of 27,712 against Richmond was the largest for a VFL home and away match to that point, but enthusiasm waned as losses mounted. By the last game just 2732 were at the MCG.

The club's playing stocks continued to be unsettled, with five players appearing in their one and only game for the year, the most in any Melbourne season. They were involved in two consecutive matches where a team kicked all three of their goals in the first quarter, first against St Kilda in Round 14, before Carlton gave them a taste of their own medicine the next week.

Melbourne fielded a side in the Seconds competition for the first time. An intra-club game was played against the Melbourne Juniors on Saturday 17 April.

Bill McClelland and Andrew Manzie were Melbourne's delegates to the VFL.
