Played just one senior game for Sandringham in his two years on the Melbourne list. Was assigned number 44 but never wore it in a senior game.

After his delisting Ayres returned to Darwin, also appearing for North Adelaide in the SANFL. By 2010 he was playing for Waratah in the NTFL, where he also appeared in 2011.

He was later the assistant coach of NTFL side Southern Districts, and filled in as their senior coach in 2015.
