Despite improved performances earlier in the season Melbourne were still expected to be cannon fodder for the much more successful yellow and blacks. On a day where the ground was so muddy the umpire had to bounce the ball away from the circle, Melbourne were behind all day before a fighting last quarter comeback almost stole victory.
Melbourne could even have won it if captain-coach Percy Wilson had finished a gilt edged chance deep into the last quarter. He ran into an open goal but shanked the kick and let Richmond off the hook,.
House was the best in the centre and as a rover, while Ogilvy impressed on debut. Haines and Wilson were dominant in the roving department.
