During the week the club had been embroiled in rumours that they were about to merge with Richmond. The story had been broken in the Sunday Herald-Sun by former Dee Gerard Healy a day after their Round 21 loss to Essendon. Healy's claims were denied by both Richmond President Neville Crowe and his Melbourne counterpart Ian Ridley.

They shook off any controversy to inflict a 13th straight defeat on the wooden spoon bound Swans.

Best were J. Stynes, Lovell and Bennett. Darren Bennett was reported for charging but cleared.
