As the Demons stumbled to the end of a disappointing season, they'd spent the week embroiled in speculation about a merger with Richmond. The story had been broken in the Sunday Herald-Sun by former Dee Gerard Healy a day after their Round 21 loss to Essendon. Healy's claims were denied by both Richmond President Neville Crowe and his Melbourne counterpart Ian Ridley.
Under the circumstances, a game against a side that had lost 12 games in a row was a good way to improve morale heading into the last fortnight of the season.
They shook off any controversy to inflict a 13th straight defeat on the wooden spoon bound Swans.
Best were J. Stynes, Lovell and Bennett. Darren Bennett was reported for charging but cleared.
