For the second time in recent weeks Melbourne followed a brave victory with a poor defeat. Hawthorn suffered a shocking lost to Fremantle in Round 18 and were keen to wipe the memories of giving the Dockers their first win of the season.
Despite a poor performance in the first quarter, with Shane Woewodin and Brent Grgic both looking completely baffled in defence, Melbourne were only three goals behind and still inexplicably in the game. An eight goal to one second quarter blew them out of the water, and despite having only three less inside 50's over the half the Hawks were 67 points in front at the long break and it was starting to look like a repeat of the 100 point massacre which ended Melbourne's pre-season cup.
Melbourne worked their way back into the match to at least break even for the third quarter with three goals each, but even after Neale Daniher delivered a red-faced blast to his side at the last change they were still comfortably outscored by the Hawks.
Best were Yze, Schwarz and Funcke. Schwarz suffered an arm injury.
