The Redlegs needed to win to make the top four, but seemed dead and buried by quarter time when they trailed the locals by more than six goals. When they got their chance with the breeze in the second quarter they nearly overhauled the Pies, drawing to just nine points behind.
Just three goals down at the last change their second quarter might have suggested a storming win, but they failed to kick another goal and finished fifth.
During the match, two players began fighting and a Collingwood fan jumped the fence to join in the fracas. He struck a Melbourne player and secretary Jack Harper performed a citizens' arrest on the fan.
