A second win in a row put the Demons back in the finals race, just a fortnight after four straight losses had them looking out of the race.

The win came off the back of another strong goalkicking performance by Norm Smith, and by keeping the Tigers goalless in two quarters. Richmond's inaccuracy also cost them dearly, as they had four more scoring shots for the afternoon but still lost by almost three goals. They won the toss and were allowed to choose which end to kick to. Their strength advantage showed, but three goals to a dominant Smith helped set up a handy lead, before two late replies by Richmond cut the margin to 11 at quarter time.

Richmond were the first to attack in the second quarter, but were unable to get past strong defence by Donald Cordner. On the rebound, Melbourne extended theri lead via O'Rourke. Richmond had several more chances but could only register points, before Fanning goalled against the run of play. The lead extended to 21 points at the long break.

The Tigers fought back in the third quarter, briefly snatching the lead late in the term before a Fanning goal after the siren restored a three point lead for the visitors. They got the only two goals of the last quarter to extend the margin, taking them back to fifth, albeit still two wins and percentage outside the top four.

At one point during the match Jack Mueller attempted a place kick from a narrow angle, but he missed narrowly.

Smith, Fanning and Bowman were best. 19th man McMahon replaced Ted Cordner (torn leg muscles) in the last quarter. Rowarth was an unused 20th man.
