Melbourne got closer than they had for some weeks, but they were still left at the foot of the ladder with one victory from their first ten matches.
South were still clinging to hope of playing finals, but a ragged performance against Melbourne did nothing to give their supporters hope of contending in September. Despite having a far superior side the Swans were forced to slog their way to victory, Melbourne successfully put the brakes on them by playing a defensive style. It ruined the match as a spectacle, but helped the visitors stay in touch until the last quarter.
Melbourne's pressing put their opposition off and forced them into a number of uncharacteristic errors. It took until the last quarter for South's centremen to break free, and the match was well won before a late Jones goal reduced the margin to single figures shortly before the bell.
Glass, Jones and Bennett were best. Deague was replaced by Avery at three-quarter time after suffering a severely bruised thigh. Vanthoff was a late replacement for Riley who had the flu.
Despite the loss Melbourne remained narrowly above Essendon on percentage at the foot of the ladder.
