Despite going in heavy underdogs, Carlton celebrated Anthony Koutafides' 250th game with a battling victory over the Demons.
Carlton led by 23 points at the last change and weathered a brief Demon attack early in the term.
Poor skills, and bad decision making hurt Melbourne. Neale Daniher put the decision down to that, and a failure to "penetrate forward of centre."
Byron Pickett was fined $900 for wrestling on his Demon debut.
