Jim Stynes received a rousing ovation as he ran out with the team and took a celebratory lap around the MCG before the first bounce.
He watched his old side, featuring three new players, earn a comfortable victory to start their season - with Jeff Farmer continuing where he'd left off in 1998. The margin was significantly less than their last meeting, when Melbourne had ruined Richmond's finals chances in Round 22 but it was a solid start to the season considering the Demons would only win five more matches.
Best were Farmey, Viney and Woewodin.
