Emselle played three games in his first season, but was one of the side's best in the reserves campaign of that year. In 1938 he played 14, and by the end of 1939 was a premiership player and one of the best in the 1939 Grand Final triumph.

Emselle retired at the end of 1943 after suffering persistent knee trouble.

His son Ken played 97 games between 1962 and 1969.
