One of the youngest players to reach 150 games for the Blues, defender Pinnell played in three Grand Finals before his 22nd birthday. After missing a spot in the 1979 Grand Final side he joined Melbourne and played two seasons before moving to Springvale in 1982 where he captain coached the Scorpions in their first VFA season.
He later served as principal of Wesley College.
