A 1970 member of the Victorian Schoolboys side, Manson returned to Victoria after a year in Queensland and was recruited to play for the Melbourne Fourths.
He graduated through the Under 19s in 1972 to play one Reserves match that year.
He then moved to Tasmania to play for Sandy Bay, then joined Federal League side Parkdale where he won a premiership in 1978. He then played for Morningside in the QAFL, Dysart in Central Queensland and Sherwood in the QAFL. Manson became playing coach of Souths Toowomba in 1984 and of Beenleigh in the SQFA in 1985.
He also played representative Gaelic Football, including matches against a Victorian side including Jim Stynes and Sean Wight.
