Keays' last act in a Melbourne jumper Cook was as one Melbourne's representatives in the 1977 Grand Final Mile race along with Brian Cook. Neither man would play for Melbourne again.
Melbourne ignored interest from VFA side Dandenong to swap Keays to Fitzroy, where he played 49 games between 1978 and 1981 before joining East Fremantle. Keays returned to Victoria to play for Springvale in 1984, where he remained through 1986.
