Rover who came to the club fresh off a Best and Fairest award at Port Melbourne, where he had played since 1973, Goss announced that he wanted to join the Demons in 1976. South Melbourne held his VFL rights and refused to clear him for less than $10,000.
He eventually made it to Melbourne's list before Round 2, 1976 in part exchange for Peter Keenan to go to North Melbourne. South paid Melbourne $25,000, and North paid them $15,000, while Keenan went to North and Barry Goodingham joined South.
Goss was immediately elevated to the senior side to boost the rover stocks. After four games in the first half of the season he returned to Port for 1977 and played 128 games for them until 1981, including the 1980 premiership.
His brother Norm played 202 games for South Melbourne and Hawthorn. Second brother Kevin played 24 games for South.
