The younger brother of Tom McDonald made his debut late in 2015 after a season of development playing in defence with Casey in the VFL.
He started his second season in the team before being injured. When he returned to the side he consolidated a senior position, playing 15 games and being named a Rising Star. He was rewarded with a new two year contract. McDonald added a further 20 games as a key position defender in 2017. He played every game for the season in 2018 including three finals, signing a two year contract extension late in the season.
Underwent a difficult 2019 when he lost his place in the backline, restricted to 12 games. Thrown forward at the end of the year due to a lack of tall forward options, McDonald kicked his first career goal in his 74th game.
McDonald played a further seven games in 2020 before being delisted at the end of the year. He trained with Carlton before the 2021 season and was signed by them as a delisted free agent before the start of the home and away season. He made his debut for the Blues in the opening round as the first player to be activated under a new 'medical substitute' rule, playing three games for them early in the year. He only added a further two in 2022 due to injury.
