The son of ex-Footscray player Mark Hunter was drafted by the Bulldogs in 2012. He secured a place in their midfield, playing in the 2016 premiership, and winning the club's Best and Fairest in 2018. He was appointed vice-captain the next year but had a turbulent 2020 season, relinquishing the vice-captaincy after one game when he was suspended for a drink driving offence. Later in the season he stepped away from the game for personal reasons. Hunter played in the 2021 Grand Final loss to Melbourne, but only appeared 10 times the following season and was traded to Melbourne at its conclusion.
Playing on the wing, Hunter debuted for the Demons against his old side in the opening round of 2023. In Round 9 of that year he was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct when, while off the ground, he ran towards the boundary to gesture at a Hawthorn player who was running past with the ball.
|Round 9, 2023||Unsportsmanlike conduct||$1500 fine|
|Round 10, 2023||Forceful front-on contact||1 match|
