Graduated from the 1975 MFC Scholarship Squad to the Fourths before making his debut as a forward, but seriously injured his knee in the Round 4, 1979 game against Richmond and didn't play VFL football again.
Richards was one of Melbourne's representatives in the 1978 Grand Final Mile race along with Gary Cooke.
Joined VFA side Caulfield in 1981 under Hassa Mann, and transferred to Sandringham in 1982.
