The son of Shaun Smith switched from playing football to basketball at 16, and was signed by Melbourne in October 2015 under the league's alternative talent rules.
Smith debuted in the first round of 2017 but suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter that cost him most of his rookie season. He returned to the senior side in Round 16 and played two more games. He was rewarded with a contract extension to the end of 2019. Played a further seven games as a defender in 2018 before suffering a broken collarbone in the Round 20 win over Gold Coast. He returned for the losing Preliminary Final.
Injured his groin in a 2019 pre-season match, and despite playing on and kicking four goals for the day was out injured for the entire home and away season. He returned, as a defender, for seven games in 2020.
Out of the side for most of 2021, Smith got an opportunity in defence at the end of the season. He played Melbourne's first final, before suffering a calf injury in a training session that cost him his place in the Demons' Preliminary Final team. He played five games in 2022 before an ankle injury put him out of the side. He returned later in the year for Casey Demons, and was named as substitute for both Melbourne's losing finals but didn't get on the ground again at senior level. He returned to play in the Casey Demons' 2022 VFL premiership side.
Smith signed a two year contract extension in late 2022, but didn't play the next year until Round 12. After returning was used both forward and back, before settling in the side's attack after a season-ending injury to Harrison Petty. He kicked a career high three goals in Melbourne's losing Semi Final. After the season ended it was revealed that Smith had failed an in-competition drug test for the Round 24 match, and he was provisionally suspended for the 2024 season.
