Originally undecided about playing league football despite being pursued by Melbourne in 1955, Sandral gave up working on his father's property at Corowa to travel to the city where he was described as the Demons' 'star recruit' of 1956. He had been pursued by several league clubs before signing with the Demons, where he played as a defender.

Sandral was a late call-up to that year's Grand Final team after Geoff McGivern was injured in the Semi Final win. He came off the bench in the second half to play in a premiership in his 15th game.

After the 1957 season he returned to Corowa and won the Best and Fairest award for the Ovens and Murray League twice (including 1959) and finished second in 1964.
