Joining the Demons from university after having earlier played two seasons with the Scotch 1st XVIII in 1937 and 1938, Mitchell proved to be a handy goalkicker in his three years on the list. He was selected for his debut after just two training sessions, and went on to earn six Brownlow Medal votes in his first season.
Midway through 1948 Mitchell temporarily retired because football was interfering with his university studies. In March 1949, he requested a clearance to Whyalla in South Australia. He was employed by BHP and wished to transfer to their facility there.
