One of the most sought after footballers of the Western District League, ruckman Bromell was chased by several league clubs by preferred to stay in the west to concentrate on farming commitments.

Despite almost becoming a Geelong player in 1963, he moved to Melbourne to train with the Demons in 1964 but announced that he would only seek a clearance from Hamilton if he was guaranteed a senior role at the Demons.

Seemingly set to get his wish he was injured in a pre-season match and forced to undergo a spleen operation which ended his season.

Eventually debuting in 1965, the only new player on the Melbourne list, Demon officials were still wrangling with Hamilton about his clearances when he was forced to retire after losing a kidney. Hamilton had refused to release him for good until the Demons agreed to play a practice match against them in 1966.

He returned to the Demons for a second season but a bout of Glandular Fever wreaked havoc with the start to his season and he didn't play a game.
