Sought by both Melbourne and St Kilda after impressing with amateur side South Yarra, Moyes opted for the Saints. He topped their goalkicking in his 1915 debut season, but didn't play again until 1919 due to the first World War. In 1916 he enlisted in the army, and that year played in a match for servicemen in London in front of spectators including the Prince of Wales and King Manuel of Portugal. During the war he was wounded twice, and returned to Australia with a bullet lodged in his back.
After taking two seasons off, Moyes returned to St Kilda in 1921. He topped their goalkicking every year until 1923. Off-field issues at the Junction Oval prompted him to temporarily retire from VFL football in 1924, rejecting overtures from Melbourne and playing half a season with Old Melburnians, kicking 18 goals in one of his games. He returned to St Kilda for a third time in June 1924.
He decided to retire again at the end of that year, but the Melbourne committee finally persuaded him to move to the MCG for 1925. Moyes was a key member of the 1926 premiership team, a year in which he was the third highest goalkicker in the league.
He represented the VFL against Gippsland in 1927 before retiring at the end of the season. From 1929 through 1932 he coached amateur side East Malvern.
In 1999 he was named in the Melbourne Grammar Team of the Century.
