The brother of Joe Rugolo started his career in the last two games of 1983 but saw his career derailed by two broken left forearms over the next two years. The first came in Round 2, 1984 and the next in Round 1, 1985.
The injury in the first game of 1985 ended his season, and when he returned in 1986 he played just two more senior games.
Rugolo booted three goals in his last game and despite trialling with Footscray went on to be a prolific goalkicker for Sandringham in the VFA.
During his time with the Zebras he kicked more than ten goals in a game six times, with a career best of 13 against Preston in 1991. He got a total of 319 goals from 82 games for the Zebras and played in the 1992 premiership after kicking 1.13 in that year's semi final. Lucky to keep his spot he got 5 goals in the winning Grand Final before playing in reserves premierships the next two years.
After leaving Sandringham he also played for Chelsea from 1995 to 1999, where he kicked 100 goals in a season twice, and as late as 2007 was still appearing for the Hampton Hammers.
