Nicknamed "Ticka", Roberts started his career at St. Kilda in 1933 but returned to Sandhurst for a year after leaving the Junction Oval. Melbourne gave him another shot at the big time in 1936 and he was an instant hit with 18 games.

One of the best off a half-back flank in the 1939 Grand Final, before playing at full-back in the 1940 edition.

Originally a goalkicker at St. Kilda, with 44 goals, he added just 5 at the Demons, and none after 1937.
