Started his career at St. Kilda with eight games in 1922 and 1923 but moved to Prahran when he couldn't make the grade at the Junction Oval. Invited to train with the Demons in 1925 he played two games, but in the 1926 premiership side Tymms became a regular and one of the best defenders in the league.

Tymms later worked as a journalist for The Argus, as Richmond's secretary/VFL delegate from 1955 until at least 1961 and a Player's Advocate at the tribunal.
