The former Tasmanian Under 17 cricket representative came to Melbourne's attention through his old Tassie Mariners coach Chris Fagan. He spent his first season in the Reserves, finishing fourth in their best and fairest before being promoted off the rookie list in early 1999. Beams kicked three goals in his second game and played 11 games for the year.
He struggled to consolidate himself in 2000, playing just six home and away games. He played in a Sandringham VFL premiership, and a week later was called into the Grand Final as a late replacement for Cameron Bruce. Beams hadn't played seniors since breaking his arm in Round 14, and his Grand Final was an unhappy one, not registering a possession in 15 minutes of playing time.
Beams started 2001 season brightly, one of the side's best in the pre-season, but after playing the first two games of the year only managed three more and was delisted. He then joined the Tasmanian VFL team, playing for them until 2006 and serving as captain. In 2008 he was appointed coach of Myrtleford but suffered a knee injury and saw his side lose every match for the season. Coached University in the Tasmanian Old Scholars League in 2009 and Glenorchy in 2012 and 2013.
