Debuted for North Melbourne in 1987, playing 61 games over nine seasons as a forward and midfielder. Unable to break into a star-studded midfield he crossed to Melbourne and played 41 games over two seasons before being delisted.

Clarkson stayed at the Demons as conditioning coach in 1998, before taking over as senior coach at VFL side Werribee. He then joined St Kilda as a specialist coach, before leading Central Districts to an SANFL premiership. Spent two years as a midfield/forward coach with Port Adelaide before being appointed senior coach of Hawthorn in 2005. He coached the Hawks until 2021, winning four premierships.
