Having finished fourth with nine wins and a healthy percentage in 1902, Melbourne were expected to again be one of the challengers for the finals but suffered a terrible season.
Despite finishing at almost polar ends of the table Melbourne defeated Carlton twice, including the round 7 game where they kept the Blues to one goal. The wins helped them avoid their first wooden spoon.
